Here's my preference, I'm sure everyone has their own.

7ft medium heavy or medium action Ugly Stick. Abu Garcia 6500 c3. Twenty lb Ande line. Not much can whip this rig Laughing

Tex has a sweet baicasting reel out now. Go to Pro Angler .com and check it out.

Tightlines

I use the Abu Garcia 6500 Blackmaxx with a 7ft MH Academy Tournament choice rod. reel is $50 and the rod is $12.. Dont let the cheap price on the rod fool you. thats one tought rod and the tip is sensitive enought to see a nibbler...

Go with the pro angler reel. It's better than the abu, more bearings, stainless, blessed by tex.

I use a 8 ft mh cat maxx and the abu garcia 6500 c3 with 30 lb mono. I rig for flats with a 3-4 oz egg weight carolina riged with 100 lb graded barrel swivel I run 8 to 10 in. of 50lb mono for a leader ( so it won't frey in it's mouth) tied to an 8/0 gamakatzu octopus circular hook. Smile it never fails....at least not yet.

i'm using a 7ft medium heavy action Ugly Stick. I have an assortment of reels but the Abu Garcia 5600 and some of Tex's pro angler reels are good. I'm using 30lb. Ande line and a 50 lb 2.5 foot leader with a bobber close to the hook.

Hello Garlandfisher,
I caught a 22 pounder in Hubbard and a 19.5 and 12 pounder at Lavon. I'm just learning how to catch the big ones myself. I noticed that there are different ways to catch the big ones but these are the ways that I have adopted. I have tried to copy these ways from successful catfisherman that I have met over the past few months.
I use a few baitcasting reels (I actually use about 7-12 rods), good medium heavy action rods, 30 lb test fishing line, 1-3 oz weights, size 6 kale hook on a caralina rig with 60 lb test mono leader. About a 3' bobber is placed a couple of inches from the hook..
I caught the 22 # north of 66 in 14 foot of water tied up to stumps and the 12 and 19.5 # in 34 foot of water barely drifting cause the wind was not blowing much. But I've seen guys catch them drifting kinda fast too.
I drift with a big 6' by 8' drift chute(looks like a underwater sail) when the wind is blowing hard. Cut shad is the bait that seems to work best but big gizzard shad heads and the smaller 4-5" shad hooked thru the eyes works good too.
Not sure of any hot spots as I am still trying to find them too. This time of year, I've been told, that the big ones follow the bait fish out to deeper water. But I think the big ones still get caught sometimes in shallow water too.
As I said, I'm still trying to figure this out myself and this is what I have been doing to catch the big ones.
Hope it helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
