Hello guys/gals, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello.

I live in Rowlett and am new to fishing on Ray Hubbard. I have been fishing most of my life so I am not going to ask anyone to give up info on their honey holes. I will put in the work to find the fish.

However, I'm hoping that someone here won't mind saving me a little time in the bait catching department. Where's the best place to do some castnetting for some good-sized gizzard shad???

Typically I will be launching from the Miller Rd ramp or the Rowlett marina.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome Redfin. Smile

Early morning by most boat ramps. Especially once the water warms a bit.

Hello Redfin
Welcome to the forum.
It's like Bigcat Dave mentioned. The shad are hard to find now but keep casting at the boat ramps as that's where we usually catch them when it warms up. I have not tried the ramps lately but if you do then let me know how you do.

The ramps are my thing as well. When it gets warmer the shad are pretty thick between miller and the rr tracks. I went out the other day and almost lost my arm throwing at ramps. wishful thinking but still was tooooo cold for them in the shallows. Had to pay 4bucks for a bag.

If you felt like burning a gallon or 2 of gas, you could go to white rock creek and snag some big shad in the creek just north of whiterock lake. Yes they really are that thick in there.

Where is the best place to access that creek, and where do you park and go in at?

From NW Hwy turn right on goforth and then left on lawther, you will see the creek and a small bridge. You can park on the left side of the rd. but fish on the north side of the rd, in the first bend that you see that is shaped like a horse shoe, it is about 15 ft there and the shad and other fish congragate there, just have plenty of hooks. lots of snags. Try this link.

Thanks for the info shannon. In this map are you referring to the bend I have labeled as "A" or "B" as the horseshoe?

There's a lot of casting nets lost in there so if you have an old one be sure to use it. I recently lost mine and ended up spending $75 to replace it. I still have to find a cheap net to buy before I go back there.I know several other people that did the same thing and now they use only the cheapest net they can find and save their good one for the lake.
Also, be careful when you go there as I know someone that was threatened by one of the fisherman because he was scaring away the fish. It is not in the best area of town especially after dark.

You can go to the Lake Lavon Forum and go to the BAIT thread and you will find a guy named Scott Sandy that sells bags of the big gizzard shad for $10.
His number is 214-729-1317. You can check with him if you are interested in buying some.
Good luck.

The area you have labeled as "A" is the horseshoe Shannon is talking about.

Hey thanks for the good info, I really appreciate it. I definitely don't want to lose my castnet so I guess I will just break out the ultra-light gear and catch 'em in the lips one at a time.

I also appreciate the tip on Scott the shad man.

Took the wife out today for a little catfishing. We launched at the Miller rd ramp and fished from the railroad bridge to the 66 bridge and even north of the 66 bridge.

We ended up with 5 blues all in the 3-4 lb range. We caught 2 on cut shad, 2 on Berkley catfish bait, and my wife caught 1 on 4-lb test mono and her favorite ultralight crappie rig using a small live minnow. We didn't set any records, and we covered alot of water for those 5 fish, but at least we didn't get skunked like our past couple of trips out.

The fish were all still very much alive when we got home and they were in the skillet less than 1-hour later. Yum-yum, dinner was mighty tasty!

Fresh-caught fish for dinner rules in my book!
