Went to Hubbard today to see if I could catch a few kitty's. I have really never spent any time on Hubbard, so I thought it might be a good day to do some looking. To my surprise, I caught a limit in about 3 hours or so. Nothing too big, just eaters. All were caught on rip rap using Shad flavored dough bait. All were caught in 2-5 foot of water using corks set at 2.5 feet. My guess is that the rip rap will be good for about another 6 weeks or so while they are spawning. Good Luck. BASSHAWK

Rip Rap is the rocks a boulders on the sides of the banks that meet the waters edge. There is tons of rip rap along the I-30 and Highway 66 bridges and highways. When I was fishing yesterday, I did not catch more than 2 in any 20 foot span. They were sort of scattered, so I just kept the boat moving. I would catch one here and then 2 there, but never more than 2. I might even go 50 feet before I got a bite. Hope this helps. BASSHAWK

Thanks for the report BASSHAWK!
I went out Sat. morning with MikeB from the Lavon Forum and we caught about 6-7 catfish and 2 gars. MikeB caught the biggest catfish at 12.10 lbs. and the 2 gars.
All were caught in about 3-6 foot of water with no luck in 13-15 foot of water.
We were using fresh cut shad and threadfin(small shad).
Here is a pic pic of MikeB and his 12.10 pound fish............ |

Nice Blue there Fish Hook. Imwishin-the way the cats were hitting on Sunday, they will probably bite all day long. I caught mine from 11-2. I feel like they will bite later in the afternoon too. Most of the bites were pretty aggresive. They were taking the #4 treble all the way in, some even took it to the point of nearly pooing it back out. LOL BASSHAWK

Imwishin, I have no doubt that shad will work. I'm just not very good at catching shad with a cast net. I have always had good luck with channels using the prepared baits that I mentioned. Me and my buddies call the prepared baits that I talked about "catfish turds". They will make your hands smell, but not nearly as bad as the dip baits will. If you got shad, give em a try. Just remember, the kitty's that I was catching were not huge. Their mouths were sort of small, so the smaller the shad the better I would think. Good Luck and post a report. I'm headed to Nacogdoches this weekend to fish with dear old dad, so Hubbard is not on the books. BASSHAWK
