My son and I decided to do some night fishing for a change. We got out there to some shallow water, about 3 ft, around 9 pm and stayed out there til 1 am. The bite was steady. We caught 10 catfish between 3-5 lbs. each and 2 gar. We had about 10 other hits that had us jumping when the clickers started screaming but must of been small ones as we were not able to hook'em.
We were using fresh cut shad filets and heads.

It seems like the snakes are out so be watchful.

Below is one fellow you do not want to mess with;

That's the real deal there. I've only ever seen 2 on Hubbard before. Makes you appreciate those friendly water snakes.

We had a new house built next to the lake and shortly afterwards, I went out into the garage one morning at 2 am and stepped on one that looked about like that. Fortunately, its head was on the other side of the storm door when I opened it so I did not get bit.
I thought I'd stepped on a shoe when I walked out into the garage and had walked about 10 feet away before turning around to see what it was. Needless to say, I did not need any coffee that morning because I had a big burst of adreneline shooting thru my veins.

Took me about 20 minutes to kill it with a hoe and a stake.

Thereafter, I took a proactive approach and went on a snake hunt day and night on the 4-wheeler. Today, I still do periodic hunts for peace of mind. It is rare that I see a snake anymore. When I do, it is usually a garter or tree/grass snake but we like those.

Here's a pic that looks like a cute little fellow I caught the other day. It actually had bighter orange/rust coloring than the pic shows. The oloring was more like the colors in the background This pic is from the web that I found that looked like it.
I found it when I opened my workshop door. It was in the top right corner wedged between the door and the doorframe.. When I opened the door it fell to the ground.
It is a young rat snake. It looked more like a baby cooperhead in coloring. So just in case I was wrong, I was very careful with it.

I've seen tons of snakes on hubbard. If you are an open lake bass fisher you probably won't see many. But they are definitely out there. Tons are on the rip rap off of the miller bridge in Rowlett early morning. I always carry a machete on the boat because some of them are aggressive and will come right up to the boat.
