Hi,
Just found this forum via Ray Roberts Forum...looks great. Whether you are a carper, or just a bank fisherman in general, you must try carpin' at Hubbard.
Lake Ray Hubbard has a great population of carp, which are the best fighting freshwater fish, IMHO. I haven't caught any at Hubbard over 15lbs, but let me tell ya....a 10lbs carp is a great fight, unless you're using a big cat rod, then you gotta loosen your drag or you might lose 'em and don't get as good of rod play that you need. Carp will hit deathly quick runs from time to time and know where the snags are many times. They may slightly suck your bait, yank a little, and often bolt off at full speed And for a bank fisherman, catching a fish that's 4-12lbs in numbers is great whether you take meat home or not.
Now...Hubbard's specialty rough sucker-type fish is the smallmouth buffalo. It's not uncommon to catch a 20lbs buffalo and sometimes over 30lbs, with many I've seen being larger. They usually suck softly and slowly, sucking in the bait, then spitting it out. Sometimes buffalo will stay on one bait for an extended period of time....I've caught some of my bigger buffs there on very long waits on slow, lethargic nibbles and wham!!! It feels like you're hung when you set the hook on a big buffalo. THey don't fight quite like carp, but the big ones are a great fight, many times moving from structure to structure....they're pretty smart fish as well.
You'll catch some fish under 4lbs, but it's unlikely to not catch a carp or buff over 10lbs, if you catch a few. Anyway, feel free to float me a message any time,
Alan |

Well,
What I usually use is basically a carolina rig. It consists of a 1/2oz slip sinker(egg sinker or bullet weight), tied to a swivel, with a 6"-8" lead. I use #4 and #2 baitholder hooks, but some people sware by circle hooks.
For bait, I use corn or bread, but when I have time, I make dough bait. Dough bait can be very easy to make, very effective, and is cheap too. If you don't feel like making dough bait, I wouldn't buy the store dough baits, unless it's made by a local who sells it. Lewisville Fishing Barge sells homemade dough bait.
If you wanna get into carp fishin', a great place to start is on Texas Fishing Forum. On the rough fish section, there is alot of useful info. to help you get started. But, the best way to learn carp and buffalo fishin' is to fish with someone with experience....that way you can learn from their mistakes they've already made and get tips and suggestions, but it's usually only as hard a sport as you make it, lol.
My name on TFF is TheFirstNameThatWorked2.

One of these days I'm going to catch a 10 pounder and above. A carp or a buffalo would be fine at this point.
Thanks for telling us about the big buffalo and carp
Alan.....what are the buffalo biting on? and where? |
